The Year of Victory

In 2016, on the first day of a brand new year, I embarked on the journey of taking ownership of one word, and that one word that I wanted to master was: FEARLESS. It was inspired by scripture in 2 Timothy 1:7 which says: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” Oh how I longed for power, love, and a sound mind! I had come to realize that what was holding me most back in my life… was fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of criticism, fear of risks. I wanted to overcome and so I vowed to dedicate myself every single day of 2016, reminding myself to live a fearless life; to choose to walk by faith and not by sight. I collected quotes, scriptures and journaled nearly every single day this process that I was going through of deciding to live a fearless life. Through the weeks and months, a visible transformation was taking place within my heart. I was becoming bolder, stronger, and more passionate about living an intentional life! A life of FAITH and not of fear!

I desperately wanted others to experience the thrill, the peace, the lasting joy that comes when you decide to look fear straight in the eyes and choose to break through the bondages that once crippled faith, hopes and dreams. I created yellow FEARLESS bracelets in 2016 and made it my ministry every single day to pass at least 1 bracelet out to someone God would place in my path needing encouragement of 2 Timothy 1:7 in their own lives. It’s something that I still do today, and the conversations I’ve had and the people God has led me to has been a treasure in itself!!! Priceless! I’ve had countless opportunities to share the Gospel of Jesus bolder than I ever have while encouraging others to live faith-filled lives, too. Encouragement is oxygen to the soul, and I’ve come to realize since 2016 that most people don’t have others encouraging them to fearlessly pursue living. I chose the color yellow because yellow symbolizes vitality, life, and new beginnings. I wear my fearless bracelet every single day as a constant reminder that in Christ I am NEW! I’m a new creation. And that God’s mercies are NEW every morning and FRESH every evening.

What I’ve learned on my journey is that once you become fearless, life becomes limitless.  Taking on that challenge changed my life. My marriage. My family. My relationships. And most importantly, my walk with Jesus. 2016 was one of the best years of our lives! Experiencing the joy of overcoming fear (and daily overcoming!) revived so much within me.

The quality of our lives are determined by the quality of our decisions. As 2016 turned it’s page to 2017, I made the decision to continue pursuing fearless living, but it was also the perfect beginning to expand my capacity, knowing and trusting that I could accomplish anything with God’s strength.

“O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!” Jeremiah 32:17

On January 1, 2017, I decided once again to take ownership of a new word, and after prayer, reflection and meditation, the word I chose was/is… VICTORY — vic·to·ry (noun): an act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition; triumph, conquest, win. I wanted 2017 to be defined as the year that I was more than a conqueror and a winner in all areas of my life. To choose not to be a victim of my circumstances, but a victor. This is the year of victory for my life, for my family’s life. It’s almost half way through 2017 and we’ve never experienced a greater calm, a greater peace, and a greater sense of what living a victorious life in the strength of Christ looks like. All that I am and ever hope to be, I owe it all to Jesus! I’m not exactly where I want to be, but I’m thankful I’m not where I used to be. I know who I am and where I’m going. Being miserable is a choice. Being happy is a choice. I’ve chosen victory every single day, and the man I’m becoming is just a testament to what God can do when you’re willing to LET HIM transform you. It’s a painful process, but true strength comes from the struggle. Today, I encourage you to take a few minutes out of the busyness of the day to pray, to reflect, and to challenge yourself on that one word or theme that you need most growth in your life.

It’s changed my life, and I believe it can change yours as well.

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” 1 John 5:4

“You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance.” Psalm 65:11

2017 is the year of VICTORY!
To God be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
